What’s the experience like?

You just sort of step out from the crowd at Waikiki Beach and there’s this golden cabana behind the Duke statue — that’s where it all starts. I was still shaking sand out of my shoes when someone from the Hāwea crew waved us over, big grin, no rush. The catamaran looked almost too perfect against the water. We kicked off our flip-flops and climbed on, sun already warm but not too much — you know that late afternoon light? It makes everything look softer.

Our guide (I think his name was Kaleo?) handed me a mai tai before I’d even found a seat. He joked about how he makes them “extra local” — not sure what that means but I tasted pineapple and something floral. The breeze picked up as we pushed off, salty and cool, mixing with sunscreen and whatever they were blending behind the bar. There were families sprawled on the nets, couples trying to get selfies with Leahi in the background (Diamond Head looks way bigger from out here). Someone started laughing when a wave splashed their feet — it’s contagious, honestly.

I didn’t expect to feel so… unhurried? Maybe it’s just being out on the water with nothing to do except sip something cold and watch Oahu slide by. The crew kept checking in, never pushy, just chatting about surf breaks or where they grew up. At one point I closed my eyes and let the wind tangle my hair — could’ve stayed like that for hours but 90 minutes goes fast when you’re floating along like that. Still thinking about how blue those waves looked under my feet.
