What’s the experience like?

I almost missed the van because I couldn't find my other glove—typical. Our guide, Jamie, just grinned when I finally showed up (one hand freezing), and said, “No one’s ever on time their first Yellowstone morning.” We set off before sunrise from the lodge near West Yellowstone. The air felt sharp enough to wake up even the sleepiest city person. Jamie passed around hot coffee that smelled like burnt toast and pine needles—honestly, it tasted better than it sounds.

The first real stop was Hayden Valley. I’d seen photos but nothing prepares you for that silence—except it’s not really silent; there’s this low hum of wind and distant honking from geese. We watched a herd of bison move through the mist. They looked ancient and kind of shaggy, like they belonged to another world. Jamie pointed out wolf tracks in the mud (they’re bigger than you’d think) and told us about a pack she saw last week. I tried to take a photo but mostly got blurry brown shapes. Still worth it.

Lamar Valley came later, after some snacks (I chose vegan—they had options ready, which was honestly a relief). The light changed out there—more gold than blue—and suddenly elk antlers caught the sun. There were a few other groups scattered along the road but everyone kept their voices down. At one point we all just stood there watching a bear lumber across the far side of the valley. Someone whispered “wow” but otherwise nobody spoke for a minute or two. That stuck with me more than any photo could.

We never saw moose—Jamie joked they were probably hiding from tourists—but somehow that made it better? Like you can’t script these things. I still think about that moment with the bear: cold air, my missing glove, everyone holding their breath together.
