What’s the experience like?

“Is that my name?” I squinted at the sign just outside the baggage claim at Da Nang Airport — turns out it was, even if my last name was missing a letter. Our driver grinned, waved me over, and helped with my bag before I could even get my bearings. The air outside felt sticky but not too hot, and there was this faint smell of coffee drifting from somewhere nearby. We’d landed late, so the city lights were kind of hazy through the car window as we drove toward our hotel in central Da Nang. I still had that jittery post-flight feeling, but sitting in the back seat with the AC on full blast, I finally started to relax.

Our driver didn’t speak much English, but he pointed out the Han River as we crossed it — “Cầu Sông Hàn,” he said (I probably butchered the pronunciation trying to repeat it). He laughed anyway. The ride was quick; maybe 15 minutes? It’s all within 7 kilometers from the airport to most hotels downtown. If you’re staying further out, they’ll let you know about any extra charge — ours was close enough for no fuss. I liked that there wasn’t any pressure or confusion about where we were going; he just double-checked our address from my WhatsApp message and off we went.

I kept thinking how nice it was not having to haggle with taxi drivers after a long flight or worry about getting dropped at the wrong place. There’s something comforting about seeing your name (even half-right) after hours in transit. If you’re flying into Da Nang and want a private transfer straight to your hotel — or need a ride back to catch an early train — this is honestly such a relief. And yeah, next time I’ll try saying “Xin chào” better.
