What’s the experience like?

We shuffled off the bus at Ha Long International Cruise Port, still half-asleep and clutching coffee, and there was our guide waving us over with a grin. I remember the salty air hit first — not sharp, just enough to make you blink. Boarding the boat felt like stepping into someone else’s daydream. The limestone islands looked unreal, like they’d been painted in by mistake. Our guide, Minh, tossed out facts about Halong Bay (1,600 islands — who counts these?) but mostly just pointed out rock shapes that looked like animals. There was this one that really did look like a turtle if you squinted.

Sung Sot Cave was cooler than I expected — literally and otherwise. You duck through this narrow entrance and suddenly you’re in a massive cavern with weird shadows flickering on the walls. The floor was slippery in spots; I nearly lost it once and Minh just laughed and handed me his flashlight. We had lunch back on the boat — lots of little dishes I couldn’t name (one tasted like lemongrass and something sweet), all shared around our table with people from three different countries. It felt oddly communal for a random day trip to Halong Bay from the cruise port.

Kayaking at Luon Cave is where my arms started complaining but I didn’t care much. The water was calm enough that you could hear other people laughing across the bay — someone shouted something in French and their friend splashed them right back. Later we stopped at Titop Beach; some folks swam but I climbed up to the lookout instead. The view made me stop talking for once. Sunlight bounced off the water in all directions — I still think about that light sometimes when it’s gray back home.
