“You ever try crawling through a tunnel barely wider than your shoulders?” That’s what our guide, Hien, asked as we stood blinking at the entrance of the Cu Chi Tunnels. I laughed — honestly, I hadn’t even thought about it until right then. The air was thick with that earthy smell you only get after rain, and somewhere nearby a rooster crowed. We’d left Ho Chi Minh City early, weaving past scooters and street vendors selling sticky rice, and suddenly here we were — surrounded by rice paddies dotted with water buffalo. It felt hard to imagine this peaceful place was once a battleground.

The tunnels themselves are… well, tighter than I expected. You can feel the cool dampness on your hands as you crawl (I banged my knee on a root — Hien just grinned). He told us stories about how families lived down here for months; he even showed us some old traps and let us taste steamed tapioca with tea, which was weirdly comforting after being underground. There’s something sobering about seeing bomb craters now filled with weeds and wildflowers. I caught myself thinking how quiet it was compared to the city’s endless hum.

Back in Ho Chi Minh City, things picked up again fast. The Reunification Palace looked almost frozen in time — those 1970s colors inside! If it’s closed for renovations (ours wasn’t), you’ll go to the War Remnants Museum instead. Then there’s Notre Dame Cathedral (still under scaffolding when we went) and the Central Post Office with its yellow walls and echoing footsteps on cool tile floors. Hien pointed out bullet marks near an old doorway; I nearly missed them because an old man outside was selling postcards in five languages and joking with everyone who passed by.

Lunch was Vietnamese-style — spring rolls that tasted like someone’s grandma made them (maybe they did), plus iced tea that cut through the heat. We swapped stories with another couple from Hanoi while wiping sweat off our faces with those wet tissues they hand out everywhere here. I still think about that first bite of tapioca after crawling through darkness; funny what sticks with you.
