What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to be sipping hot tea on the deck by 9am, watching the mist slide off the limestone cliffs around Lan Ha Bay. The drive from Hanoi was early—still half-asleep when our guide, Minh, greeted us with that big grin and a joke about “Vietnamese alarm clocks” (he meant roosters). Onboard, there was this smell of salt and engine oil mixed with something sweet—maybe the welcome drink? I can’t say I was fully awake until we started gliding past Cai Beo fishing village. It’s older than I’d imagined, all these floating houses with laundry flapping in the breeze. Minh pointed out a fisherman mending nets; his hands moved so fast it looked like magic.

The first real jolt of excitement hit at Dark & Bright Cave. Kayaking there is wild—the water goes glassy green under the arches and you can hear your own paddle echoing off the stone. At one point, a little fish jumped right into my friend’s lap (she shrieked; Minh just laughed and said it was good luck). The caves feel ancient and silent except for distant voices bouncing around. We drifted for what felt like ages before heading back to the boat. Lunch came next: heaps of fresh crab, sticky rice, some kind of tangy fish sauce that I still crave now. They asked if anyone was vegetarian—felt thoughtful.

After lunch I sort of lost track of time. The sun came out strong as we reached Ba Trai Dao Beach—white sand, hardly anyone else around. Swimming here felt different from other places; maybe it’s just being far from crowds or maybe it’s the way the water tastes faintly mineral. Some folks tried snorkeling but I mostly floated and watched clouds move over those jagged islands. The crew set up fruit plates for a “sunset party” on the way back—someone played old pop songs on their phone and we all just lounged around, tired in that happy way you get after hours outside.

Back at Beo Wharf by evening, hair still salty and skin warm from the sun. Minh shook everyone’s hand before we got back on the bus to Hanoi—he said something about how “the bay remembers faces.” Not sure what he meant but I keep thinking about it now and then.
