What’s the experience like?

The pickup was supposed to be at 2:00pm sharp in Golem, but I somehow mixed up the meeting spot and ended up waiting by a bakery that smelled like fresh burek. Our guide, Ardit, found me anyway—he just grinned and said it happens all the time. We set off towards Prezë Castle first, winding through little villages where people waved from doorways and laundry flapped in the breeze. I’d seen castles before but this one felt different—less polished, more lived-in. There was a group of old men playing dominoes under a fig tree right inside the walls.

Driving into Bovilla Canyon was something else—the rocks looked almost pink in the late afternoon light, and you could hear crickets even with the car windows up. Ardit told us how the lake supplies water for Tirana (I didn’t know that), and pointed out wild herbs growing along the trail. The hike up Gamti Mountain wasn’t long but it got my heart going—loose stones underfoot, sun dipping lower every minute. At one point I stopped just to catch my breath and realized how quiet it was except for distant goat bells. That silence sticks with me.

The Bovilla Lake viewpoint is what everyone talks about on this day trip from Durres to Bovilla Lake, but photos don’t really show what it feels like when you’re standing there—wind tugging at your shirt, sky turning gold over those turquoise waters. We sat for a while without saying much; Ardit poured strong coffee from a thermos and shared some local chocolate (not fancy, but perfect). On the way back down he pointed out where eagles sometimes nest—I didn’t see any but kept looking up anyway.
