What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the monkeys to be so bold at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve. One minute we’re standing by a low stone wall, the next there’s this flash of green tail darting past my shoes—honestly, I flinched. Our guide, Marcia, just grinned and told us to keep our sandwiches hidden unless we wanted company. The air smelled a bit earthy, mixed with sweet fruit from somewhere nearby. Kids were laughing (some adults too), and the monkeys seemed to know exactly when feeding time started—like they had watches.

After that rush of energy, Bathsheba felt like another planet. The drive over was bumpy—Marcia warned us about “island massage roads”—but worth it for that first look at the Atlantic crashing against those weirdly shaped rocks. We grabbed sandwiches from a little spot she recommended (I went for flying fish; still not sure what all was in it but it tasted fresh and salty). There was a breeze coming off the water that made everything smell clean, almost metallic. I sat on a rock for a while just watching waves hit the shore—honestly, could’ve stayed longer.

Harrison’s Cave was cooler than I expected—literally and figuratively. You board this open tram and roll into darkness, then suddenly you’re surrounded by these dripping limestone formations that look like something out of a sci-fi movie. The guide pointed out stalactites and stalagmites (I always forget which is which) and even turned off the lights for a second so we could hear water echoing in the dark. It was kind of eerie but peaceful too. I kept thinking about how old everything down there must be.
