What’s the experience like?

We rolled out of Maceió just after sunrise, windows down because the morning was already sticky. Our driver, José, wore his company shirt and badge — he waved at nearly everyone we passed. I tried to count the coconut palms but gave up quick; there are too many. Somewhere near Barra de Camaragibe, José pulled over so we could try fresh tapioca from a roadside stand. It tasted like warm rain and sugar — not what I expected but somehow exactly right for Alagoas.

The drive to São Miguel dos Milagres isn’t long (about two hours), but it’s not about speed. The road gets quiet, then suddenly you’re in this small town where everything feels slowed down — even the sea looks lazy here. We stopped at a little rim (I think that’s what José called it — my Portuguese is still tragic), and he pointed out a church painted in faded blue and white. There was this salty breeze that made my shirt stick to my back, but I didn’t mind. Kids ran barefoot past us chasing each other, laughing so loud I almost missed what José said about the place being famous for miracles.

I’m not sure if I believe in miracles, but sitting there watching old men play dominoes under a mango tree… well, something about it felt good. Lunch wasn’t fancy — grilled fish with farofa at a spot José liked — but honestly? It’s one of those meals I’ll remember longer than most dinners back home. On the way back, the sky turned heavy and gray for a bit; it smelled like wet earth through the open window. We didn’t talk much then. Sometimes that’s better.
