experience

What’s the experience like?

We rolled out of Vancouver just after sunrise, still half-asleep but already laughing about who forgot their sunglasses. The bus windows fogged up as we crossed into the Okanagan Valley — it’s drier than I expected, almost desert-like, with orchards and vineyards stretching forever. Our guide, Mark (he grew up in Kelowna), handed around little samples at the winery stop — I tried a white that smelled like green apples. Not my usual thing but honestly, it tasted like summer. Lunch was loose; we wandered around town, ended up sharing fries with a couple from Montreal who’d never seen mountains before. By Revelstoke that night, my shoes were dusty and I could still smell the wine on my hands.

The next morning felt cooler — you could see your breath when we stepped outside. Breakfast at the hotel was basic (toast and coffee), but everyone was buzzing about Lake Louise. When we got there, it really did look fake — that turquoise water is unreal in person. I sat by the edge for a while just watching people take photos; one kid dropped his mittens in the lake and his dad had to fish them out with a stick. Moraine Lake came next — less crowded, quieter somehow. The light bounced off those jagged peaks in a way that made me forget about my phone for once. We hit Banff late afternoon; Mark pointed out Bow Falls and told us stories about old movie stars at the Banff Springs Hotel (he might’ve embellished). Dinner was on our own — I grabbed poutine from a busy spot on Banff Ave and watched people drift past under neon lights.

Driving along Icefields Parkway was colder than I’d packed for — should’ve brought gloves. The glacier tour is optional but most of us did it anyway; standing on ancient ice is stranger than you’d think (it crackles under your boots). We stopped in Jasper for dinner — elk burgers if you’re brave or just soup if you’re tired — then caught sight of Mount Robson through low clouds. It’s huge but kind of shy behind all that mist. That night in Valemount felt quiet after Banff; even the hotel hallways seemed hushed.

The last day started slow, breakfast at the hotel before heading to Spahat Falls. You could hear the water before you saw it — this deep roar echoing through pine trees. On the drive back to Vancouver people swapped photos and stories; someone passed around leftover snacks from Day 1. I kept thinking about Moraine Lake’s color and how cold my hands got on the glacier. Still can’t believe how much ground we covered in four days.
