What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the paint—Lunenburg’s houses look like someone spilled a box of crayons along the harbor. Our guide, Mark, waved us off the van (a Ford Transit, comfy enough for my long legs) and pointed out the Bluenose II bobbing gently in the mist. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet, maybe from some bakery nearby—I never did find it. Walking those old wooden sidewalks, you can almost hear stories creaking up from the boards. Mark told us about shipbuilders and lost sailors; I tried to picture it all while dodging a local kid on a scooter.

We ducked inside St. John’s Anglican Church—still smells a bit like smoke if you get close to the woodwork (they rebuilt after a fire). Sunlight through stained glass made little colored puddles on the floor. At the Fisheries Museum, I touched an old rope that felt rougher than I expected—like it still remembered storms. A retired fisherman named Ed showed me how lobster traps work; he had these big hands and this dry way of joking about tourists getting pinched. There was something grounding about listening to him talk, surrounded by all that history.

Mahone Bay was quieter but almost too pretty—those three churches lined up across the water look just like every postcard you’ve ever seen. We stopped for coffee at a place where everyone seemed to know each other. Someone laughed when I tried to pronounce “Mahone” right (I didn’t). Then came Peggy’s Cove—the wind there is sharp enough to wake you up if you’re drifting after lunch. Climbing over those pale granite rocks, I felt tiny next to the Atlantic crashing below. There were warning signs everywhere about rogue waves; honestly, I kept one eye on the sea at all times.

I still think about that moment standing by Peggy’s Point Lighthouse—just me and some gulls yelling overhead, salt stinging my lips. The sky kept changing its mind between blue and gray. It wasn’t perfect weather or perfect photos, but somehow that made it feel more real—you know?
