Summary

Montmorency Falls bike ride riverside paths Quebec City

You’ll pedal along Quebec City’s riverside trails with a local guide, feeling the breeze off the St. Lawrence as you approach Montmorency Falls by bike. Ride up in a cable car, cross the suspension bridge above roaring water, and enjoy time to explore or just take it all in before heading back—legs tired but heart lighter.

experience

What’s the experience like?

First thing I noticed was the smell—wet leaves, a bit of river mud, and something sweet from a bakery we passed just after leaving Quebec City. Our guide, Marc, waved us onto the bike path that hugs the St. Lawrence River, and honestly, I was nervous about keeping up. But it turns out nine miles goes by fast when you’re distracted by boats gliding past and those big old trees leaning over the water. There was this moment where I caught a whiff of woodsmoke from someone’s backyard barbecue—felt weirdly comforting so far from home.

We stopped for water in a little park halfway there. Marc pointed out a heron standing so still on the rocks I almost missed it. He told us stories about how people used to cross here in winter when the river froze (I can’t even picture that). The closer we got to Montmorency Falls, the louder everything got—the wind picked up and you could hear this low roar before you actually saw anything. And then suddenly there it was—so much taller than I expected, like it just dropped out of nowhere.

The cable car up was fun—my legs were grateful—and at the top you get this wild view back toward Quebec City. The suspension bridge swayed just enough to make me laugh nervously (Marc said it’s “part of the experience”). Spray on my face, sun in my eyes, and everyone taking turns peering over at that white rush below. We had about an hour to wander or just sit on a bench if you wanted—I walked across twice because I couldn’t decide which side felt better.

I still think about that sound—the falls crashing down while everything else goes quiet for a second. On the way back along the river, my legs were tired but my head felt clear in that way only being outside all day can do. Not sure if it was the ride or something about Quebec air.
