What’s the experience like?

Ever wonder how you’re supposed to see Vancouver when you’ve got a suitcase in one hand and a cruise departure looming? That’s where this city sightseeing tour comes in — we hopped on right from our hotel (luggage and all), met our guide, Ravi, who greeted us like old friends, and set off through Gastown’s brick streets. The steam clock let out its little whistle just as we passed. I tried to count the number of different languages I heard in that short stretch — lost track at five.

Chinatown was next — the air changed there, sort of sweet and herbal from the shops spilling dried roots onto the sidewalk. Ravi pointed out a bakery where he gets his favorite buns (I wish we’d had time to stop). Then suddenly we were crossing the bridge toward Granville Island. We wandered through artist studios and the public market; someone handed me a slice of smoked salmon so fresh it almost melted. I’m still thinking about that taste. My partner tried chatting with a potter about glazes — they ended up laughing over some shared disaster stories.

The weather was typical Vancouver: sun, drizzle, then sun again. Stanley Park felt ancient under those cedar trees. At Prospect Point, Ravi told us about the First Nations history here while we watched ships slip under Lions Gate Bridge. I bought an ice cream even though it was chilly — something about eating it there just felt right. English Bay was last; palm trees waving like they belonged somewhere warmer, but nobody seemed to mind.

By the time we reached the cruise terminal, bags unloaded for us and no stress at all, I realized I’d actually seen more of Vancouver than I ever expected with just a few hours to spare. Funny how sometimes the best bits happen when you’re not really planning them.
