What’s the experience like?

“If you see a black fin cut the water, shout — I don’t care how loud,” our skipper grinned as he zipped up his own suit, way faster than any of us could manage. I was still fumbling with the thick zipper on my flotation suit, wondering if I’d overdressed (spoiler: I hadn’t). The dock at Wharf Street smelled like salt and rubber and that faint whiff of seaweed you only get this close to the ocean. Everyone seemed a little jittery, but in a good way — like we were all kids about to break some rule.

The Zodiac ride itself was...well, honestly, it’s hard to describe without sounding dramatic. Cold air slapped my cheeks and the spray tasted almost metallic on my lips. Our guide — I think her name was Sam — kept one hand steady on the throttle while pointing out distant shapes: “Harbor seals over there!” The boat would slow just enough for us to catch our breath (and maybe sneak a photo), then roar off again. At one point, someone spotted what looked like an orca fin slicing through the grey water. Everyone went quiet for a second except for one guy who just whispered “whoa.”

I didn’t expect to laugh so much — especially not when my hands were half-numb and my hair was sticking up in every direction from the wind. Sam told us stories about humpbacks returning each season, and how sometimes you can hear them breathe before you see them. That stuck with me for some reason. We saw sea lions barking on a rocky outcrop; they looked huge even from a distance. And yeah, I still think about that view back toward Vancouver Island as we headed in — low clouds hanging over the hills, gulls wheeling overhead. It felt like three hours went by in twenty minutes.
