What’s the experience like?

The drive out from Guilin was longer than I expected, but watching mist curl over the fields made it feel like we were slipping into another world. Our guide—Mr. Chen, who also drove—pointed out little things I’d have missed, like how the bamboo shoots along the road are used in local dishes. When we pulled up at Longji’s parking lot, the air smelled almost sweet, like wet earth and something green I couldn’t name. The first thing you notice is how quiet it gets once you leave the car behind.

Climbing up to Ping’an village meant stone stairs and a slow rhythm (my knees complained a bit). We passed Zhuang women in bright headscarves chatting on their porches; one waved and called something I didn’t catch. Mr. Chen stopped to show us a wooden house—he said families here build without nails, just careful joints. At Viewing Platform No. 2, there it was: the “Seven Stars with the Moon” formation everyone talks about. It’s not just a view—it feels layered, almost alive, with tiny figures working in fields far below.

The walk between viewpoints was easy enough, mostly flat and shaded by bamboo groves that creaked in the breeze. There was a moment where everything went quiet except for distant laughter and a rooster somewhere down in the terraces. Lunch came at a little restaurant just off the path—sticky rice cooked inside bamboo tubes (I tried to copy Mr. Chen’s technique but mine collapsed onto my lap; he laughed). Afterward we wandered Huangluo village for a bit—the Yao women’s long hair really does reach past their knees. I still think about that view from earlier though, when sunlight hit all those green curves at once.
