What’s the experience like?

I almost missed the pickup because I’d convinced myself there was time for one more coffee at the hotel — classic me. The driver just grinned when I rushed out, still half-wet from a quick shower, and said something about “pura vida timing.” The ride from La Fortuna to the Sarapiqui River felt like it went by in a blink, maybe because our guide, Diego, kept pointing out birds I’d never even heard of. He handed us bottled water with a laugh and said, “You’ll need this more than sunscreen.” I didn’t believe him until we actually hit the rapids.

The first splash of river water was colder than I expected — not freezing, but sharp enough to wake you up if you were still sleepy. There weren’t many other rafts out; Diego said that’s why he likes the afternoon trips. It felt quieter somehow. We paddled through these Class III rapids that looked wild but were honestly just fun (I’m not exactly an adrenaline junkie). At one point we drifted under this thick canopy where everything smelled green — like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t place. Diego tried to teach me a bird name in Spanish; I butchered it and he just shook his head smiling.

We stopped at a bend for a fruit picnic right on the riverbank. The pineapple tasted different here — less sour? Or maybe it’s just being hungry after paddling. Someone jumped into a pool off a rock and splashed everyone else; my arms were tired but it felt good to float for a minute, letting the current tug at my legs. The sun was lower by then and you could hear monkeys somewhere off in the trees (or maybe it was just wishful thinking). On the way back, Diego poured us coffee from a thermos that tasted smoky and strong — better than anything at my hotel breakfast.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed after rafting. Maybe it was being out there with fewer people around or just laughing with strangers who suddenly felt familiar for those few hours. Sometimes travel surprises you like that — not big moments, just little ones that stick.
