What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the salt in the air—like you could almost taste it before you even got close to the water. Our instructor, João, handed me a rash guard that still smelled faintly of sunscreen and ocean. He grinned and said something about “everyone standing up today,” which I honestly doubted (I’ve got the balance of a sleepy cat). But he made it sound possible, so I just went along with it.

We started on the sand, practicing that awkward pop-up move while João watched and gave little tips in between laughs. The sun was already warming my back, but the Atlantic breeze kept things from getting sticky. When we finally paddled out, I was surprised by how heavy the board felt under my arms—nobody tells you about that part. The waves weren’t huge, but they looked bigger from down low. There were a few other folks in our group—some locals, some travelers like me—and everyone cheered when someone managed to stand up for more than two seconds. I wiped out a lot (like, a lot), but João just gave this thumbs-up every time I came up sputtering.

I actually did stand up once—sort of wobbly and probably not pretty—but for a second it felt like flying. Afterward, we flopped onto the beach chairs they set up for us under these blue-striped umbrellas. My arms were jelly and my hair was full of sand, but sitting there with everyone laughing about their wipeouts felt almost as good as catching that wave. There’s something about being tired and salty and happy at the same time—I didn’t expect that part.
