What’s the experience like?

The air cools down fast once the sun dips behind the trees at Sendero Tranquilo. I remember pulling my jacket tighter as our small group gathered near the entrance, just before 5:30 pm. Our guide, Andrés, handed out flashlights—nothing too bright, he said, so we wouldn’t scare off the creatures waking up for the night shift. The forest felt different already: quieter, but with this low hum of insects you don’t notice during the day.

We followed a narrow path under tall branches, leaves crunching softly under our boots. Every now and then, Andrés would pause and point out something I’d never have spotted on my own—a tiny frog clinging to a leaf, or the glint of spider eyes reflecting our beams. The smell of damp earth mixed with something sweet from fallen fruit nearby. At one point, we heard a rustle overhead; Andrés grinned and whispered about kinkajous hunting for ripe guava. It’s wild how much is happening here after dark—he told us nearly 80% of these animals only come out at night.

Sendero Tranquilo sits lower than most cloud forest reserves around Monteverde, so it’s less misty but still fresh thanks to Pacific breezes. That means you get a different mix of wildlife—lots of birds settling in for sleep, bats swooping low, even armadillos if you’re lucky. We didn’t rush; sometimes we just stood still and listened to the forest wake up around us. By the end of the walk, I’d lost track of time completely.
