What’s the experience like?

I never thought I’d end up singing along to reggaeton with strangers in downtown San Jose, but that’s exactly what happened. The night started quietly enough—sticky air, a bit of rain on the sidewalk, and me awkwardly waiting outside the first bar because I was early (classic). Then our guide, Diego, waved us in with this huge grin. He knew everyone behind the bar already. First round: a cold local beer for me, Smirnoff for someone else. It tasted sharper than I expected—maybe nerves or just Costa Rica’s way of saying hi.

We moved from place to place fast—one moment it was neon lights and salsa beats, next it was a quieter spot with old wooden tables and people telling stories in Spanish and English. Diego kept things moving but never rushed us; he pointed out little details like the mural outside Bar 2 that locals use as a meeting spot (I’d have walked right past). Every bar had its own vibe. At one point I tried to order “chiliguaro” and totally butchered it—Diego laughed so hard he almost spilled his drink.

I lost track of how many shots we had (six? eight?) but nobody seemed to care about counting. People from all over—Canada, Colombia, Germany—just mixed together without fuss. There was this moment when the music got loud and everyone started dancing, even if they didn’t know how (myself included). It felt safe somehow; maybe because Diego kept an eye out or maybe because San Jose at night is just friendly like that. We ended late but not too late—the kind of tired where your cheeks hurt from smiling more than anything else. I still think about that last song echoing as we walked out into the streetlights.
