What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit it — I was nervous standing there on Tamarindo Beach, clutching a board that felt way too big for me. The sun was already warming up the sand and you could smell salt and sunscreen everywhere. Our instructor, Diego, grinned and told us not to overthink it. “Just let the wave do its thing,” he said. Easier said than done, but his Costa Rican calm was kind of contagious.

We started with a quick ocean safety chat (Diego kept it light but you could tell he meant it), then practiced popping up on the boards right there in the hot sand. I got sand stuck everywhere — still finding some days later — but nobody cared. There were only three of us in my group lesson, so Diego actually watched each awkward attempt and gave little tips like “move your foot more forward” or “look ahead, not down.” It felt personal without being intense. When we finally paddled out, the water was cooler than I expected and pelicans kept swooping past like they owned the place.

The first time I stood up (for about two seconds), everyone cheered — even a kid from another group who’d been wiping out all morning. After that I relaxed a bit; maybe too much, since I faceplanted twice in a row and swallowed half the Pacific. At one point Diego shouted something in Spanish I didn’t catch but laughed anyway. By the end, my arms were noodles but someone handed me cold pineapple slices right there on the beach and honestly? That tasted better than any fancy dessert back home.
