What’s the experience like?

We climbed aboard just as the sky was starting to soften over Brijuni, the kind of light that makes you squint but you don’t mind. The crew—can’t remember all their names, but one of them handed me a glass of chilled white wine before we even left the dock—seemed genuinely excited for us. There was this mix of sunscreen and sea air in the breeze, which sounds cliché until you’re actually out there sniffing it yourself. Someone’s kid kept asking when we’d see dolphins. I was wondering too, honestly.

Once we got away from the coast, our guide pointed out where bottlenose dolphins like to hang around these islands. He said they know some by sight—imagine recognizing a dolphin like a neighbor. For a while it was just quiet water and low chatter, then suddenly someone shouted and there they were: three or four dolphins arcing through the gold light, close enough that you could see their backs glisten. I tried to get a photo but mostly just stared like an idiot. The captain grinned at us all, like he’d set it up himself.

Dinner came out right after—a plate of grilled fish for me (they had veggie stuff too), still steaming in the cool air. Eating on deck while watching those dolphins play… it felt weirdly peaceful. At one point my fork slipped and I almost dropped my food, but nobody cared; everyone was laughing or pointing at another splash in the distance. I still think about that view sometimes—the sun melting into the water, everything quiet except for someone’s laugh or a bit of music from someone’s phone.
