What’s the experience like?

We’d barely cleared customs at Punta Cana airport when I spotted my name on a sign — not gonna lie, that felt oddly reassuring after the flight. Our driver, Luis, waved us over with this easy smile and took my suitcase before I could even protest (he had a way of making you feel like you’d known him for ages). The air outside was thick and sweet, a little salty too, and the parking lot was buzzing with drivers calling out names in Spanish and English. I almost followed the wrong guy but Luis just laughed — “No worries, happens every day.”

The van was spotless and cool inside, which honestly felt like a small miracle after the sticky heat. There was WiFi onboard (I didn’t expect that), so I texted my mom back home while we rolled out of the airport. Luis pointed out some local spots as we passed — a bakery he likes, a beach where his kids swim. He told us about the best time to visit Macao Beach (“not too early, not too late — trust me”), and gave us tips on what to avoid near Bavaro if we wanted quiet. He even showed me how to say “gracias” properly; I probably still butchered it but he just grinned.

The drive to Royalton Resorts Punta Cana was smooth — maybe 30 minutes? It’s funny how quickly the city gives way to palm trees and those wild bursts of color from roadside flowers. At one point I caught this whiff of grilled chicken drifting in through the window at a stoplight; made me wish we’d skipped airplane food. When we pulled up at the resort, Luis handed us our bags like it was nothing. He said he’d be back for our return trip — “same smile, same sign,” he joked. And yeah, somehow that stuck with me.
