What’s the experience like?

We were already halfway down the dock when I realized my hat was going to fly off — the wind from the sea just doesn’t care about your plans. Our guide, Manuel, laughed and showed me how he ties his cap down “like a fisherman.” The catamaran was bigger than I’d pictured, music playing low, some families already sipping sodas. The water around Punta Cana is this wild turquoise you almost can’t believe until you see it for yourself. I tried to take a photo but it never looks right — too bright, too much sun bouncing off everything.

The crew handed out snorkel gear as we anchored near the reef. I hesitated — not sure if I’d panic with the mask on — but Manuel just said “poco a poco” and waited while I worked up the nerve. The water was warm, almost soft somehow, and once my face went under it was suddenly quiet except for my own breath and these flashes of yellow fish darting between coral. I lost track of time floating there. My son waved at me underwater (he’s braver than me) and when we climbed back up he said he saw something that looked like a tiny blue pancake. No idea what that was.

After snorkeling we drifted over to this private stretch of sand — not totally empty but quiet enough that you could hear kids laughing and someone cracking open a cold bottle nearby. There were snacks passed around, nothing fancy but just salty enough to make you want another drink. The sun felt heavier by then; everyone started moving slower, like we’d all agreed to stop rushing for a while.

The last stop was the Bavaro natural pool. It’s shallow enough to stand waist-deep even far from shore, which felt weird at first (I kept thinking it should get deeper). People toasted with plastic cups in the water; one woman taught us how to say “cheers” in Spanish — “salud!” — but mine came out wrong and she just grinned at me anyway. On the way back, salt still on my skin and hair everywhere from the wind, I caught myself thinking about how easy it is to forget real life out here.
