What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the bass thumping through my flip-flops before we’d even left the dock in Punta Cana — like you could actually feel it in your chest. Our guide, Luis, handed me a snorkel mask and grinned, “Don’t lose this one!” (I did last time I tried snorkeling somewhere else.) The water was that weirdly clear blue you only see in postcards. When I slid off the catamaran’s side — yeah, there’s an actual slide — the sea felt colder than I expected. Not bad though. Just sharp enough to wake you up.

Snorkeling was wild. Fish everywhere, darting around like they owned the place. One of the crew dove down and pointed out this electric-blue thing (I forget the name) — he laughed when I tried to repeat it in Spanish. After that, we all piled back onto the boat for drinks. Rum punch tastes different out here; maybe it’s just the salt air or maybe it’s because someone else is pouring it for you while hip hop blasts overhead. There were snacks too — tropical fruit mostly — sticky-sweet and gone fast.

By the time we hit the sandbar, everyone was loose. The DJ switched up to old-school beats and suddenly people who’d barely spoken were dancing waist-deep in water with strangers. It got loud but not in an annoying way — more like everyone forgot about looking cool for a minute. I ended up laughing with a couple from Montreal about how none of us could really dance but nobody cared. Sun on your face, drink in hand, music bouncing off the waves… I still think about that view sometimes when work gets heavy back home.
