What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the sand or the water, but this soft click from our photographer’s camera—like he was catching something I couldn’t see yet. We met him near Bavaro Beach, just as a breeze started tossing my hair into my face (he laughed and said it looked “natural,” which I’m still not sure was a compliment). He had us walk along the edge where the sea foams up—my nephew kept running ahead, leaving tiny footprints that vanished almost instantly. The light was weirdly perfect, kind of golden but not too harsh. I could smell sunscreen and salt, and there was this faint music drifting over from a beach bar somewhere behind us.

I’d never done anything like a professional photographer in Punta Cana before—usually I’m the one hiding from cameras at family reunions. But he made it feel easy, just chatting about his favorite local foods (he swears by mangu for breakfast) while snapping away. We changed outfits right behind a palm tree (no one cared), and he didn’t rush us at all. At some point my sister tried to pose like she’d seen on Instagram, but mostly we just ended up laughing at ourselves. He showed us a few shots on his camera—honestly, I didn’t expect to look that relaxed.

Afterwards he handed us cold water bottles (needed that), and drove us back to our hotel in his van—air conditioning blasting, thank god. He promised we’d get more than 100 edited photos within a couple days, which sounded wild but actually happened even faster. There’s this one picture of my mom holding her sunhat against the wind—I still think about that moment when I miss the ocean. It’s not about looking perfect; it’s more like saving these little pieces of being together before they slip away.
