What’s the experience like?

I never thought I’d be so grateful to see my own name on a sign. After an overnight flight into Cairo International Airport — you know that foggy feeling when you’re not sure if it’s morning or night? — I spotted a guy holding up my name just outside arrivals. He waved, grinned, and honestly, I felt like someone important for a second. It was just nice not having to guess where to go next.

The air outside the terminal was warm and kind of dusty, but stepping into the car (air-conditioned, thank god), I could finally breathe out. Our driver introduced himself as Ahmed. He asked if my flight was okay — apparently they’d been checking it all morning because sometimes flights land late here. That made me laugh; I hadn’t even told them about the delay yet. There’s something comforting about people who just quietly handle things before you even ask.

On the way into Giza — traffic is its own adventure here — Ahmed pointed out some neighborhoods and told me where he gets his favorite koshary after work. The city feels huge and alive, even when you’re jetlagged and watching everything through a window. When we pulled up at my hotel, he helped with my bag (I always overpack), wished me a good stay, and said if I needed anything else I could just message on WhatsApp anytime. That little gesture stuck with me more than I expected.
