What’s the experience like?

Hands pressed to cool glass, I squinted at Tutankhamun’s gold mask—our guide, Amira, leaned in and whispered a story about how it was found. She had this way of making the museum feel less like a maze and more like someone’s attic, full of secrets. The air inside the Egyptian Museum smelled faintly of old paper and something metallic. I kept losing track of time, staring at tiny amulets and wondering who’d last touched them.

Outside, the city felt louder somehow after all that quiet. We drove through streets that seemed to fold into each other until we reached Old Cairo. Walking under low arches into the Hanging Church, I noticed a woman lighting a candle—her hands shook just slightly. The stone was cold under my palm. Amira pointed out carvings I would’ve missed (she laughed when I tried to pronounce “Muʿallaqa” correctly—nope). The Ben Ezra Synagogue was quieter than I expected; there was this dusty light coming through high windows, and for some reason it made me think about all the people who’d come here hoping for something.

Khan el-Khalili hit me like a wall of sound—voices bargaining, metal clinking from somewhere deep in the market. Perfume sellers waved tiny bottles at us; one dabbed something on my wrist that smelled like orange blossoms and smoke. We sat for tea while Amira told us how her grandfather used to bring her here as a kid. It felt good just to sit and watch people moving past with trays balanced on their heads or arms full of bright scarves. I still think about that view from our tiny table—Cairo never really slows down.
