What’s the experience like?

I’d always heard Cairo was noisy, but I didn’t expect the quiet that hit me inside the Hanging Church. Our guide, Mahmoud, met us right at our hotel—he smiled like he knew we were nervous about crossing the city. The drive to Coptic Cairo felt like a blur of horns and sunlight bouncing off old stone. When we finally stepped into the church, it smelled faintly of incense and old wood. I tried to picture what this place looked like centuries ago, but honestly, I was just glad for the cool shade.

Mahmoud told stories as we wandered—the kind you don’t get from guidebooks. He pointed out little details: faded icons tucked in corners, a window where light fell just so. I asked him if he ever got tired of these places and he laughed, “Never. Every group sees something different.” After that we headed over to Islamic Cairo for the Saladin Citadel. The walls looked almost golden in the afternoon haze. Walking up to Mohamed Ali Mosque, my shoes crunched over gravel and dust. There’s this echo inside when you speak—a strange hush under all that marble and blue sky peeking through high windows.

I tried saying “thank you” in Arabic—shukran—but probably butchered it; Mahmoud grinned anyway. Lunch was optional but we stopped for falafel because honestly, how could you not? The taste still lingers—spicy, earthy, way better than anything I’d had back home. On the way back to our hotel I watched families weaving through traffic, kids laughing on street corners. It’s funny how a four-hour tour can leave you feeling like you’ve barely scratched the surface—and somehow that’s enough for now.
