What’s the experience like?

First thing — my scarf nearly blew away before we’d even started the quad biking. I fumbled with the knot while our guide, Khaled, just grinned and helped me tie it tighter (he said everyone does that their first time). The quad bikes looked a bit meaner than I expected, but after a quick safety talk — mostly hand gestures and some English — we were off, engines rumbling under us. The sand here outside Marsa Alam isn’t just yellow; it’s this shifting mix of gold and pale pink, especially when the sun’s low. I kept getting distracted by the light changing every few minutes.

We stopped at what looked like nothing from far away — just a cluster of tents and a few camels chewing quietly. But up close, the Bedouin village had this calmness to it. There was mint tea (super sweet), and one of the women showed us how she bakes bread on hot stones. I tried to say thank you in Arabic; they laughed gently but nodded anyway. Riding the camel after that felt slow compared to the quads — you sway so much you kind of lose sense of time, which is weirdly nice.

I didn’t expect dinner to be so lively — kids darting around, someone playing a drum near the fire. The food was simple but smoky and good, and by then my hair was full of sand and I honestly didn’t care. On the drive back to Marsa Alam, I realized how quiet everything felt out there in the desert. Still think about that silence sometimes.
