experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was nervous on the boat ride out from Marsa Alam—two hours felt longer than I expected, maybe because I’d barely slept. But when our guide Hossam started pointing out the changing color of the water, that deep turquoise you only see in the Red Sea, I forgot about everything else. There was this salty breeze and someone’s sunscreen mixing with coffee from the galley—oddly comforting. Hossam joked that spinner dolphins like to show off for new visitors, but honestly I didn’t believe him until we got there.

The first time I slid into the water at Sataya Dolphin House, it was quieter than I thought it would be—except for these high-pitched clicks echoing underwater. Suddenly there they were: spinner dolphins everywhere, moving in tight groups, twisting around each other like they were playing tag. At one point a dolphin came so close I could see its eye—felt like it was sizing me up (or maybe just laughing at my flippers). It’s hard to explain what that does to your mood. You forget you’re wearing a mask or that your legs are cramping a bit from excitement. And yeah, I tried to keep up but those dolphins are fast.

Lunch on the boat tasted better than any meal should after swimming—simple grilled fish and rice but somehow perfect when you’re wet and sunburned. Everyone was swapping stories; one kid kept insisting he saw a “dolphin baby” (maybe he did). After lunch we headed for another snorkeling spot along the coral reef. The colors down there are unreal—purples and yellows you don’t get on land—and schools of fish darting everywhere. My mask fogged up halfway through and I had to laugh at myself bobbing around trying to clear it while everyone else dove deeper.

I still think about how calm everything felt on the way back—sun drying salt on my skin, people napping or just staring out at the water. If you want a day trip from Marsa Alam that leaves you feeling lighter (and maybe a little sunburned), this is it.
