What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the first real smell of the day to be orange blossom—sharp and sweet—floating out of the Fragonard perfumery in Eze. Our guide, Marc (who joked he’d never get used to the winding roads), had just pointed out how the village clings to its cliff like it’s holding its breath. The view over Cap Ferrat was all blue haze and tiny white boats. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it didn’t do it justice. Sometimes you just have to stand there for a second and let your brain catch up.

Monaco felt almost unreal after that—clean stone streets, old men in linen jackets outside cafés, and a silence near the Prince’s Palace that made me whisper without meaning to. We wandered through Monaco Old Town; Marc told us about the Formula 1 circuit as we drove those tight corners (he grinned like he’d done it a hundred times). I’m not much for casinos but Monte Carlo really does look like a movie set—glassy windows, palm trees, people trying not to stare at each other too much.

Cannes was busier than I thought it’d be in early afternoon—kids chasing pigeons on the Croisette, someone hosing down red carpet steps outside the festival palace. My shoes got sandy walking by the beach. In Antibes we passed market stalls with olives and cheese; an old woman handed me a fig with a wink when I tried my French (not great). There’s something about these towns that makes you want to linger but there’s always another stop.

St Paul de Vence came last—the light was gold by then—and I kept stopping just to look at doorways painted blue or watch an artist sketching outside his gallery. It’s quieter here; you hear sandals on stone and distant laughter from inside cafés. I still think about that view over the valley as we headed back toward Nice, tired in that good way where your feet ache but your head feels full. Not sure I’ll ever smell orange blossom again without thinking of this day trip from Nice.
