What’s the experience like?

I nearly missed the turnoff for Ampuis — blame the early start or maybe my excitement about finally tasting Syrah where it’s actually grown. Our guide, Lucie, waved us over with that kind of relaxed confidence you only get from someone who’s spent years among these vines. She handed me a glass right away — Viognier, pale gold, smelled like apricots and something almost floral. I tried to describe it but just ended up grinning at her. She laughed and said, “It’s different here, right?” It really was.

The walk through the Côte-Rôtie hills felt steeper than I expected (my shoes weren’t ready), but the view over the Rhône Valley made me forget about my feet for a bit. Sun hit the rows of vines at an angle that made everything look sharper. Lucie explained how the sun exposure on these slopes changes everything about the grapes — I nodded along but honestly was still thinking about that first sip. There was a kind of earthy smell in the air, mixed with wild herbs and something like warm stone after rain.

We stopped again under an old fig tree — Lucie poured Syrah this time. Silky is what she called it; I just remember how it lingered on my tongue longer than any red I’ve had back home. Someone asked if people ever get tired of this view; Lucie just shrugged and said she never had. We all laughed at that, and I realized I was already planning to come back someday, maybe with better shoes next time.
