What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered what wine actually smells like before it’s bottled? I didn’t, until we were standing in this vineyard just outside Nice—somewhere between the salty air from the coast and the piney hills behind us. Our guide (Marie, who grew up nearby) kept stopping to crush leaves between her fingers and let us sniff them. It was early afternoon, kind of warm but not sticky, and you could hear cicadas buzzing over her voice. She explained how the wind here changes the grapes—honestly, I’d never thought about wind as an ingredient before.

The walk was slow, which I liked. No rush. Marie told us stories about her grandfather picking grapes by hand—she even pointed out a gnarled old vine that had apparently “seen more sunrises than I have.” We wandered into the winery itself after that. The air inside was cool and smelled like wet stone and something sweet underneath. There were big barrels lined up, and she showed us how they age the wine—my partner asked a question about sulfites (I still don’t totally get it). There was a moment when everyone just went quiet listening to her talk about harvest days; you could tell she really cared.

The tasting part felt almost like sitting in someone’s kitchen. Five wines if you do the Gourmet or Private option (we did), each poured with a little story attached. The rosé tasted like strawberries but not in a fake way—I tried to describe it but just ended up laughing at myself. Cheese came out too, all local stuff; one was so creamy it nearly slid off my knife. Marie teased me for trying to pronounce “tomme” with a terrible accent (she laughed, not meanly). If you book the private tour, they’ll pick you up in Nice so you don’t have to worry about driving back after all that wine…which is honestly a relief.
