What’s the experience like?

We started weaving through the 4th arrondissement just after breakfast, my camera still feeling awkward in my hands. Our guide—Marie, who wore this bright red scarf—pointed out how the morning light hit Notre Dame’s stone. She showed me how to angle for shadows, and I remember the faint smell of fresh bread drifting from somewhere behind us. I kept fumbling with my lens cap and she laughed, told me “everyone does that at first.” It made me relax a bit.

Crossing over to the 1st arrondissement, the Louvre’s courtyards were already buzzing but somehow Marie found this quiet spot near the pyramid. She talked about reflections—how even puddles can make a photo sing—and then let me experiment for a while. I got totally absorbed trying to catch people’s silhouettes against all that glass. At one point I forgot we were on a photography tour in Paris and just watched people moving through the space, which maybe is part of it too.

By the time we reached Place de la Concorde, my hands were less clumsy and I’d actually started using manual mode (never thought I’d get there). The fountains sparkled under midday sun, and Marie let me take my time with framing shots—she never rushed us. We ended up near the Seine, Eiffel Tower poking above the trees in the 7th arrondissement. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for distant traffic and a couple arguing softly in French nearby. I still think about that view sometimes, how different it looked once you really paid attention.
