What’s the experience like?

Li, our instructor, greeted us at the dock with this huge grin—like he already knew we were nervous. He asked if we’d ever tried an introductory dive in Bora Bora before (nope), then started joking about how the fish here are more curious than shy. I liked that he didn’t rush us; we just sat on the boat for a while, listening to the soft slap of water against the hull. The air was thick and salty, and honestly, my heart was pounding a bit harder than I wanted to admit.

Underwater felt nothing like I expected. There’s this moment when you first go under—my ears popped and everything went quiet except for my own breathing. Li kept checking on us, giving these reassuring thumbs-ups. The coral garden is right there in the lagoon, maybe fifteen minutes from shore? It’s wild how close it is to town but feels like another planet. At one point a little yellow fish darted right up to my mask—I flinched and almost laughed out loud through my regulator (don’t recommend). The sunlight made these patterns on the sand that I still think about sometimes.

Afterwards, back on the boat, Li handed me a slice of pineapple and said something in Tahitian I definitely butchered trying to repeat. He just laughed and waved it off. My hair was full of salt and I had that weird mix of tired and giddy you get after doing something new. We rode back slowly with the breeze drying our faces—nobody really talked much but it felt good anyway.
