What’s the experience like?

You know that feeling when you’re not sure what to expect, but you show up anyway? That was me in Freiburg, standing under the shadow of the cathedral, waiting for Betty BBQ. She swept in—pink wig, rhinestones everywhere—and suddenly the whole square felt lighter. There were a few locals hanging around who gave her a little wave (she winked back). Our group shuffled closer. I could smell roasted chestnuts from a street cart nearby, which mixed weirdly well with her perfume. It was already clear this wasn’t going to be your usual city tour.

We wandered through Freiburg’s old streets—Betty at the front like some kind of fabulous pied piper. She cracked jokes about the city council (“they still don’t know what to do with me”), pointed out little details on buildings I’d walked past earlier without noticing. At one point we stopped by Münsterplatz and she launched into a story about late-night parties in the Black Forest that had everyone laughing (and maybe blushing). I tried to repeat one of her catchphrases in German; she burst out laughing and corrected me gently—“You’re getting there, honey!”

The best part? The way she made the city feel alive—like every corner had its own secret or inside joke. People passing by would smile or shout something friendly; it felt like being let in on a local secret. The weather was doing its usual springtime thing—sun one minute, drizzle the next—but nobody cared. By the end, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. I still think about that walk when I hear someone mention Freiburg.
