"You just landed? No rush, I’m here," popped up on my phone from Nikos, our Athens airport transfer driver. I’d barely cleared customs when his message came through—somehow that tiny thing made me feel less lost in the shuffle of arrivals. He sent a photo of where he was waiting outside, so we didn’t have to do that awkward scanning-the-crowd thing. It was humid but not sticky, and the air smelled faintly of coffee from somewhere nearby.

We found him leaning against a shiny black minivan (I think he said it was two years old? Looked new to me), grinning like he’d been expecting us all day. He grabbed our bags before I could even try to lift mine—my shoulder still thanks him for that—and ushered us into blissful air conditioning. Bottled water already waiting in the cup holders. The ride into the city was smooth, mostly highway at first, then suddenly Athens started appearing out the window—white buildings stacked up the hills, flashes of blue graffiti here and there. Nikos pointed out a bakery he likes near Syntagma Square (I wrote it down but can’t pronounce it). He offered WiFi right away—felt weird checking email in Greece but hey, practical.

I asked about good places to eat late since our stomachs were on another time zone; he rattled off three spots locals go for souvlaki and one for late-night coffee. His English wasn’t perfect but honestly, that made it better—it felt more real somehow. We chatted about football teams (he’s Panathinaikos all the way), and he laughed when I tried to say “efharisto.” By the time we pulled up to our Airbnb, I felt like we’d gotten a mini tour instead of just a ride. He insisted on carrying every bag right up to the door.
