What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed after landing in Athens was the dry, late-afternoon warmth — not too harsh, just enough to make my shirt cling a little. I’d barely made it past baggage claim when I spotted my name on a sign, written in neat blue marker. My driver, Nikos, waved and grinned like he’d been expecting me for ages. He shook my hand (firm grip, not rushed) and helped with my suitcase before I even had time to fumble with the handle. There’s something oddly comforting about not having to scan for taxis or guess which shuttle might be yours — especially after a long flight.

The car was cool inside, almost chilly compared to the terminal air. Nikos asked if I wanted Greek radio or silence — I picked music, but honestly just stared out the window most of the way. The drive from Athens airport to Piraeus port isn’t short (about 45 minutes if traffic’s kind), but it didn’t drag. We passed olive trees and these faded apartment blocks with laundry fluttering on balconies — real slices of city life you’d miss on a bus. At one point Nikos pointed out the old Olympic stadium through the windshield; his pride was obvious even though he just shrugged and said, “Still standing.”

We talked about ferries and cruise ships — apparently summer mornings get wild at Piraeus port with all the arrivals. He gave me tips on which gate to look for (E11 for most cruise lines), then double-checked my ship name just in case. When we pulled up, he hopped out first and flagged down a porter before I could even open my door. Maybe it sounds silly, but that small gesture — just someone making sure you’re set before they leave — stuck with me longer than expected.
