What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest — I’d seen photos of Elafonisi Beach before, but I didn’t expect the sand to actually look pink up close. It’s more like a blush, scattered along the shore where the waves meet the grains. Our driver, Giorgos, grinned when he saw me crouching down to check. “It’s not Photoshop,” he said. We’d left Chania that morning with no real plan except to see this famous place — but somehow, the drive itself became half the adventure. The air smelled faintly sweet as we passed olive groves, and Giorgos pointed out a cluster of hives near a tiny honey museum. We stopped for a quick tasting; I still remember that warm, herbal flavor of thyme honey on fresh bread. Never thought I’d care about bees so much.

The road twisted through hills and suddenly those Komolithi clay mounds appeared — they really do look like something from another planet. Not many people around; just us and a couple of goats watching from a distance (they seemed unimpressed). By the time we reached Elafonisi Beach, it was late morning and already bright enough to make you squint. The water was shallow and almost glassy. Kids were laughing near the sandbar, chasing tiny silver fish. I walked barefoot across to the islet — soft sand underfoot, little shells everywhere — and for a minute it felt like time slowed down.

Lunch happened in this sleepy village called Elos, tucked in green hills. The taverna owner brought out slow-roasted lamb and homemade cheese without even asking what we wanted (“You trust me?” he winked). Honestly? Best meal of our trip — maybe because it tasted like someone’s grandmother had cooked it all morning just for us. Later we stopped at Chrysoskalitissa Monastery perched above the sea; Giorgos explained the legend about its golden step but admitted he’d never seen it himself (“Maybe next time you’ll spot it”).

We could’ve squeezed in Kedrodasos Beach or Agia Sofia Cave if we’d rushed, but honestly I liked having room to linger instead of ticking boxes. On the way back, windows down, sun dipping behind mountains — there was this calm quiet between us all. Still thinking about that view over the lagoon as we left Elafonisi… you know how some places just stick with you?
