What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel nervous about something as simple as getting picked up at the Santorini airport, but there I was—squinting at the crowd of signs, clutching my bag a little tighter than I’d admit. Then this guy in a blue shirt waved my name (with a little smiley face drawn on the sign—nice touch), and suddenly it felt like someone had flipped off the stress switch. The air outside was thick with that salty island smell, and honestly, I just wanted to get moving.

The car was cool inside—literally, thank god for air-conditioning—and our driver, Nikos, handed me a bottle of water before even asking my name. He joked that he’s “not allowed” to let anyone dehydrate on his watch. We talked about how summer traffic can turn even a short Santorini private transfer into a mini adventure (he called it “Greek patience training”). The WiFi worked better than at my hotel later that night. At one point we passed some wild thyme growing by the road; Nikos pointed it out and said his mother uses it for tea when she can’t sleep. I tried to remember what wild thyme smells like but all I could catch was the faint lemony scent from my hands after squeezing the water bottle too tight.

When we got to my place in Fira, Nikos hopped out first and grabbed my suitcase before I could argue. He double-checked the trunk (“You sure you didn’t forget anything? My cousin once left his phone in here for two days!”) and waited until I’d found my keys before heading off. It wasn’t fancy or dramatic—just easy, which is exactly what you want after flying halfway across Europe. I still think about how relieved I felt seeing that silly smiley face sign; sometimes it’s those small things that stick.
