What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect the air at Distillery Bonne Mère to smell so… sweet? It hit me as soon as we stepped past the old iron gates — sugarcane and something deeper, maybe molasses, hanging in the heat. Our guide, Lucie, waved us over with a grin and started talking about how her grandfather used to work here. She had this way of making even the rusty railway bridge sound like a family heirloom. I kind of loved that.

We wandered through the distillation museum first, where copper pipes twisted everywhere and old photos lined the walls. Lucie showed us these battered tools — some from the 1800s — and explained how they’d haul cane across that bridge out back. The place felt alive somehow; you could almost hear echoes of boots on stone floors if you paused long enough. I got distracted by a faded poster for “Grands Rums” (my French is still terrible), but Lucie just laughed and said I should try saying it in Creole next time.

The cellar was cooler, almost damp, and stacked with barrels — thousands of them. It smelled woody and sharp all at once. We tasted three rums: one clear as glass, another golden and spicy, then an older one that burned slow but finished soft. Not gonna lie, I coughed on the last sip (Lucie pretended not to notice). There was no pressure to buy anything after, but I picked up a bottle anyway — couldn’t help myself after hearing those stories. Honestly, I still think about that first taste every now and then.
