What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the Taj Mahal to feel so quiet at sunrise — I mean, you see all those photos online, but actually standing there with just a handful of people around was something else. The marble felt cool under my fingers (I touched it when our guide wasn’t looking — he just grinned), and the air had that faint smell of wet grass and incense drifting from somewhere nearby. Our guide, Rajiv, told us about Shah Jahan’s heartbreak building this place for Mumtaz. I tried to imagine loving someone that much. He pointed out tiny details in the inlay work I’d never have noticed on my own. My photos don’t do it justice, but honestly, I still think about how soft the light was on her tomb.

Afterwards we went back to our hotel for breakfast — DoubleTree if you’re wondering, and yes, they do a pretty good masala chai. Then it was off again in the AC car (thank god for that), winding through Agra’s busy streets with honking rickshaws everywhere. When we got to Agra Fort, Rajiv waved at one of the guards like they were old friends. The fort is massive — all red sandstone walls and echoing courtyards. You can almost hear old footsteps if you stand still long enough. He showed us where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his own son (family drama doesn’t get more intense than that), and from one of the windows you can see the Taj Mahal shining across the river.

I kept thinking about how many hands built these places — Rajiv said 20,000 artisans worked on the Taj for over twenty years. It’s hard to wrap your head around numbers like that when you’re staring up at arches taller than some apartment buildings back home. There was a moment in one of Agra Fort’s marble rooms where everything went quiet except for a pigeon flapping somewhere above us. Not sure why that stuck with me.
