What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the car headlights flickering across empty Delhi streets at 3am. I was barely awake, but our driver handed me a bottle of water and grinned like this was just another Tuesday. By the time we hit the Yamuna Expressway, everything outside looked washed in blue-grey. I tried to nap but mostly watched the sky change. When we finally reached Agra, our guide—Anil—was already waiting with a scarf around his neck and that easy way locals have of making you feel like you’re not totally lost.

Walking up to the Taj Mahal before sunrise felt surreal. There’s this hush—like even the birds are holding back. The marble was cold under my hand (I touched it, just to check), and Anil told us how Shah Jahan built it for his wife. He pointed out little things: the way the morning light makes patterns on the tiles, or how you can see your breath if you stand still long enough. I took too many photos and probably missed some details, but honestly? I still think about that first glimpse when the sun hit those domes. It’s quieter than you’d expect—a kind of soft awe.

After that we went to Agra Fort. It’s massive, red sandstone everywhere, with echoes bouncing off old walls. Anil showed us where emperors held court; he joked about how even now people argue over who had better taste in architecture—Akbar or Shah Jahan (I’m still undecided). Lunch was at a local spot—spicy paneer and naan that made my nose run a bit. No regrets there.

The last stop was Itimad-ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” It’s smaller but so detailed up close; white marble inlaid with colored stones, almost delicate compared to everything else we’d seen. We wandered quietly for a while before heading back toward Delhi, tired but happy. The city lights were coming on as we drove in, and I realized I hadn’t checked my phone all day.
