What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so at ease right after landing in Kochi. There’s always that little worry about finding your ride, but Muhammed was already waving at me outside arrivals, holding a sign with my name (spelled slightly wrong, but honestly that made me smile). The air smelled faintly of rain and cardamom — Kerala’s way of saying hello, I guess. We loaded my bag into his white sedan (cleaner than my own car back home) and set off toward the city.

Muhammed chatted about the best places to eat on MG Road and pointed out some temple lights flickering through the drizzle. He slowed down when we passed an old man selling chai under a blue tarp — “good tea there, if you have time,” he said. I liked how he drove: careful but not slow, always seeming to know which lane would move faster. The Kerala taxi service felt like more than just a ride; it was like getting a quick intro to the place before you even reach your hotel.

We stopped briefly at a roadside stall so I could grab a bottle of Thums Up (he insisted it was better than Coke), and he handed me two bottles of water from the back seat — “from Neo Travel Mart,” he said, almost formally. It’s small stuff but it made me feel looked after. The drive wasn’t long, maybe forty minutes with light traffic, but I still remember the smell of wet earth and how everyone seemed unhurried compared to bigger cities. When we pulled up at my guesthouse, Muhammed helped with my bag and told me where to find breakfast nearby. Not sure why that stuck with me — maybe because it felt like someone actually cared if I got settled in okay.
