What’s the experience like?

“Mumbai’s always moving — you’ll see,” our guide Sameer grinned as he opened the car door for us outside the hotel. He was right. The city felt like it was humming even before 9am, rickshaws weaving past fruit carts, someone selling chai on the corner. Sameer was still finishing his degree at university but already knew every shortcut and side street. He pointed out a mural I’d have missed, told us it was painted by school kids after Diwali last year — I liked that he didn’t just stick to the big sights.

The air-conditioning in the car was honestly a relief — Mumbai in late morning is sticky, and I’m not built for humidity. Our driver (I never caught his name, which I regret) navigated traffic with this calm that made me feel oddly safe even when we squeezed between buses. Sameer chatted about cricket scores with him in Hindi, then switched back to English for us without missing a beat. At one stop, an old man selling marigold garlands waved at Sameer — they joked about something I didn’t quite catch but it made me smile anyway.

I didn’t expect to care so much about small things: the smell of incense drifting from a temple doorway, or how the sunlight hit piles of mangoes at Crawford Market. We saw some famous places (Gateway of India is bigger than I thought), but it was these little moments that stuck with me more than any monument. The tour included pickup and drop-off right at our hotel — which meant we could just relax and watch the city go by on the way back. I still think about that mural sometimes when I see bright colors anywhere.
