What’s the experience like?

“You want chai?” Our driver grinned at me through the rearview mirror as we zipped through Delhi before sunrise. I’d barely woken up, but there was something about that first cup—spicy, sweet, almost smoky—that made me feel like I was already on an adventure. The Gatimaan Express felt more like a moving living room than a train: families sharing snacks, someone quietly snoring nearby. We reached Agra before I’d fully processed how fast we’d gone. It’s strange, seeing the Taj Mahal appear out of the haze—like it’s floating. Our guide, Rajiv, told us about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz as if he knew them personally. He pointed at the marble inlay and said, “Look closer.” I did. The stones are cold under your fingers, smooth but not slippery—hard to explain unless you touch it yourself.

I didn’t expect the gardens around the Taj to be so calm. There were kids giggling near the fountains and an old couple taking selfies (they asked me to take one for them; I nearly dropped their phone). After that we headed to Agra Fort. The red sandstone is rougher than you think—almost gritty—and there’s this echo when you walk through certain halls. Rajiv kept tossing little facts at us (“This window? That’s where Shah Jahan watched the Taj after he was imprisoned”) and then he’d just let us stand there for a minute in silence. Lunch was at some fancy place—I can’t remember the name—but the dal had this smoky thing going on that I’m still thinking about.

We finished at Itimad-ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” It’s smaller but somehow more delicate; white marble everywhere but with these tiny colored details you only notice if you get close enough. A group of local kids waved at us from across the lawn and tried out their English (“Where are you from?”). The whole day felt weirdly short and long at once—I guess because everything is so packed in, but nothing felt rushed either. On the way back to Delhi I kept replaying that first glimpse of the Taj Mahal in my head… honestly, it still doesn’t feel real.
