What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the road out of Delhi to feel so quiet at 5am. Our driver, Rajiv, handed us water bottles and played old Bollywood songs as we sped down the Yamuna Expressway—he said it’s best to beat the heat and crowds. I half-dozed, watching the sky go from black to that hazy pink India does so well. By the time we reached Agra, I was more awake than I’d thought I’d be.

Walking up to the Taj Mahal with our guide Priya felt almost unreal. She pointed out how the morning light made the marble glow (she called it “soft like milk,” which I loved). There was this faint scent of wet earth and roses—someone nearby must’ve been selling garlands. Priya told us about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz, but honestly, I kept getting distracted by all the little details: the cool stone under my hands, birds swooping over the domes. Some tourists were taking selfies; an older couple just stood there in silence. It’s hard not to feel something big in that place.

Afterwards, we headed to Agra Fort. The red sandstone felt rougher than I expected—Priya laughed when I tried to pronounce “Jahangiri Mahal” (I definitely butchered it). She knew every shortcut through those winding courtyards and showed us where Shah Jahan was kept in his last years. There’s a view of the Taj from one of those windows—I still think about that moment. Lunch was at some hotel restaurant (I forgot the name), but there was dal makhani so creamy I nearly asked for seconds.

We skipped the marble workshop—too tired—but on the drive back to Delhi, Rajiv told us stories about his family’s Diwali celebrations. The sun set somewhere behind us; traffic picked up again near Delhi but no one seemed bothered. If you’re thinking about a day trip from Delhi to see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, this is probably as easy as it gets—and honestly? Worth every sleepy minute.
