What’s the experience like?

There’s this moment when you first see the Taj Mahal from the road—our driver slowed just enough for me to catch my breath. I’d barely finished my coffee (Delhi pickup is early, trust me), but suddenly there it was, hazy and almost floating. Our guide, Sameer, met us right at the gate and handed over cold water bottles like some kind of hero. He knew exactly where to stand for that classic photo—my hair was a mess but honestly, who cares? The marble felt cool under my hand and the air smelled faintly sweet, like wet stone and something floral I couldn’t place.

Lunch came at just the right time. We sat in a busy restaurant in Agra—waiters weaving between tables, clinking plates—and Sameer insisted we try the paneer tikka. He laughed when I tried to pronounce it (“It’s okay, you’re learning!”). After eating way too much naan, we headed to Agra Fort. The red sandstone looked almost soft in the sun. There were families everywhere: kids darting around columns, older couples sitting quietly on shaded benches. Inside one of the halls, Sameer pointed out tiny details—carvings I would’ve missed if he hadn’t stopped me. It’s wild how much history fits inside those walls.

The last stop was the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” It’s quieter here; less crowded than I expected. The gardens were full of birds and a few local kids playing cricket off to one side (one ball rolled right past my feet). The marble work is delicate up close—almost lace-like—and I found myself tracing patterns without really thinking about it. By then my energy was flagging but our driver had snacks waiting in the car (lifesaver), and somehow the ride back felt shorter than the way there. I still think about that first glimpse of white through morning mist—you know?
