I’ll never forget stepping out of our car in Agra—after hours of highway from Delhi, suddenly there was this thick morning air, kind of sweet and dusty at the same time. The first glimpse of the Taj Mahal is strange—like your brain doesn’t believe it’s real. The marble almost glows in that early light, and there’s this quiet hum of voices and birds overhead. Anjali told us about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz (I always thought it was just a love story but there’s way more to it). There were school kids on a field trip waving at us (one tried out his English: “Welcome to India!”). The whole day felt personal—like we were guests rather than tourists being herded around. Having pickup from Delhi made things easy; we just climbed into an air-conditioned car before sunrise and let someone else worry about logistics.

I still think about that moment standing under the main dome—the echo when you whisper, the coolness of stone under your hand even as sweat runs down your back outside. It’s not perfect (there are always crowds somewhere), but for a day trip to the Taj Mahal from Delhi or Jaipur with a local guide who actually cares if you’re having a good time… well, I’d do it again tomorrow if I could.
