What’s the experience like?

First thing I noticed was the way the sun hit the water at Nusa Dua — kind of blinding but in a good way. Our driver, Pak Ketut, laughed when I squinted and handed me a pair of knockoff Ray-Bans from his dashboard. The air smelled faintly salty, mixed with coconut oil from someone’s towel nearby. I didn’t even bother checking my phone after that; it felt pointless with all that blue in front of me. We waded in, toes sinking into the warm sand, and just floated for a bit. It’s not quiet exactly — kids yelling, someone selling pineapples cut into spirals — but somehow peaceful anyway.

Gerger Beach was next. It’s smaller, less crowded, and honestly I almost slipped on a rock getting in (Ketut saw and tried not to laugh). The water here is clearer than I expected. There’s this moment where you hear nothing but your own splash and some distant motorbike up on the road. We dried off in the sun and watched a local family set up a picnic under an umbrella made out of patched plastic — they offered us some fried banana, which tasted like caramel and sea air.

Padang Padang is where all the surfers hang out. Even if you don’t surf (I definitely don’t), it’s fun to watch them try to catch waves while a dog naps right in the middle of everyone’s flip-flops. By late afternoon we drove up towards Uluwatu Temple — you can smell incense before you see anything. The guide wrapped a sarong around my waist before we walked along the cliff edge; he told us about monkeys stealing sunglasses (they really do) and pointed out where people gather for the Kecak fire dance at sunset. The light turns everything gold for maybe ten minutes — I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck back home in traffic.
